Coreless Direct Drive Motor

The motor, the heart of the direct-drive turntable, is based on the coreless direct-drive motor designed for the SL-1200G model introduced in 2016 and further improved. The newly developed dual-coil, dual-rotor, coreless direct-drive motor features coils on both sides, for a total of 12 spindles and 18 drive coils, sufficient to generate the high torque required to drive the new 7.9kg platter. Positioning the coils on both sides at a 60-degree angle has improved the rigidity of the substrate, eliminating any vibration and reducing inductance. These improvements have achieved stable rotation with wobble and flutter of 0.015% or less, a measurement considered to be at the limit of detectability. Furthermore, the thrust bearings that support the heavy platter are made of a special plastic that ensures both high rigidity and reliability.

Eliminating Unwanted Motor Vibration

The motor developed for the SL-1200G turntable served as the basis for the direct-drive motor. The double voice coil, reinforced thrust bearings, and a body with increased rigidity achieved a stable motor with a low center of gravity. The installation of two high-rigidity, high-specific-gravity stainless steel weights at the bottom of the chassis helped maintain both rigidity and a low center of gravity. These fundamental measures prevent unwanted vibrations and contribute to increased rotational precision, as well as improving the S/N (Signal to Noise) ratio.

The turntable platter in the heavyweight class

At the outer edge of the 10 mm thick brass platter layer, small tungsten weights have been placed. These weights have a very high specific gravity and are very difficult to cast and, therefore, to produce. The brass layer is laminated onto the die-cast aluminum, resulting in a total platter weight of approximately 7.9 kg and an inertial mass of approximately 1 ton/cm. To eliminate unwanted vibrations, the back is lined with sound-absorbing rubber, forming a three-layer structure that ensures high rigidity and excellent vibration damping.

Separate Control Unit

To eliminate the effects of unwanted noise, the control unit is separated from the main body. To achieve a power circuit capable of providing the necessary output for the high torque, a switching power supply was used. To reduce pickup noise, the switching power supply features exclusive technology that delivers ultra-low-noise voltage, thanks to the newly developed "unwanted noise reduction circuit." Furthermore, communication between the main unit and the control unit is designed to withstand the effects of external noise and ensure maximum reliability. These noise reduction measures have achieved the world's best S/N (signal to noise) ratio.

Precise adjustments and rotation indicator

This turntable supports analog LP (33 1/3 rpm) and EP (45 rpm), as well as SP (78 rpm) records. The control unit allows rotation (rpm) to be adjusted down to two decimal places (maximum ±16%). The OLED display can also display rotation with two decimal places accuracy, allowing the user to both hear and see the rotation in exquisite detail.

Highly sensitive tonearm

As is tradition, Technics uses static balance with a universal "S"-type tonearm made of lightweight, highly damping magnesium to ensure the tonearm accurately tracks the record's rotation. The gimbal suspension tonearm uses high-precision bearings. Highly skilled Japanese craftsmen handle the entire assembly and manual balancing process to achieve high start-up sensitivity that precisely tracks the grooves cut into vinyl records. To ensure that the signal transmitted by the stylus is free of damping and that all the musical energy present in the vinyl grooves is retained, the internal wiring is OFC, resulting in extremely dynamic sound reproduction.

Tonearm Base

The tonearm base is seamlessly integrated with the turntable. To ensure top performance, the tonearm bearings, turntable bearings, and stylus position remain constant, forming a single structure that minimizes vibrations caused by the rigidity of the turntable base materials. An optional tonearm base can be purchased, allowing you to install short or long tonearms made by SME or Ortofon in addition to the standard tonearm (up to three, including the standard tonearm).
