Folded Motion ® XT Obsidian Tweeter

MartinLogan's Folded Motion tweeter is a marvel of audio engineering. Its folded thin-film diaphragm gives it a far larger surface area than traditional dome tweeters of the same size. This “squeezed” design also requires significantly less excursion than a dome tweeter, revealing controlled dispersion characteristics and incredibly low distortion. These tiny tweeters mimic the high-frequency detail and slew rate of a large electrostatic panel in a small space.

The Masterpiece CI Series takes things a step further with Folded Motion XT Obsidian tweeters, which further advance thin-film transducer technology.

The Folded Motion XT design features a 40% larger radiating surface and controlled 80 x 30-degree dispersion. This innovation increases audible bandwidth without sacrificing detail and minimizes distortion to an unprecedented degree, while also increasing the efficiency of the tweeter’s already lightning-fast response time.

The result is superior realism and alarming specificity. Folded Motion XT takes thin-film transducers to the next level, and the result is acoustically astonishing.

Powerful mid-range and bass drivers with multi-section unidirectional carbon fiber cones with Nomex ® mounts

Masterpiece CI speakers feature custom-made cones using unidirectional carbon fiber, a material that is twice as strong as steel but one-sixth the density, for exceptional rigidity without excess weight. They are designed in multiple sections to take full advantage of the material's benefits.

Each cone is braced with a Nomex mount, providing additional damping that prevents boominess and reduces failure modes in these extremely rigid cones. The drivers feature powerful, efficient magnetic structures, which enable massive excursion and enormous sound output while preserving deep bass detail, even at sustained, lifelike volume levels.

The Monument 7XW features passive radiators made from the same high-strength, low-mass material as the woofers: multi-section, unidirectional carbon fiber cones with Nomex® mounts. These passive radiators deliver incredibly powerful, dynamic, and distortion-free bass from a small, discreet, sealed enclosure.

Driver Technical Details

To ensure accuracy in the critical midrange, the mid-frequency drivers feature a specially designed “stiff” suspension. Suspension stiffening (the spider and surround) raises the driver's resonant frequency and optimizes its performance to achieve a natural roll-off and inherently operate within an ideal range for mid-frequency reproduction (as opposed to a comparably sized woofer).

Each cone includes a concave dust cap that adds additional strength and rigidity, further reducing breakup modes. An inverted surround design maximizes space behind the grille cover for improved driver excursion, clarity and linearity.

Phenolic Baffle and Sealed Back Box

A key to replicating the performance of traditional loudspeakers with hidden and integrated drivers is the use of sealed, volume-controlled back boxes.

The Statement 40XW, Monument 7XW, Tribute 5XW and Icon 3XW feature incredibly dense phenolic resin polymer baffles, with an aluminum faceplate. This phenolic resin polymer is the same material we use in Neolith's massive acoustically inert cabinet. It offers a remarkable material consistency that naturally minimizes harmful resonances and vibrations.

Masterpiece CI back boxes fit into standard stud walls. They provide a controlled and predictable air space (volume) within which the specially designed drivers can perform at their best. The sealed enclosure removes variables like wall cavity size and construction quality from the acoustic equation, ensuring consistent, accurate performance no matter the installation specifications.

In addition, the hermetically sealed design prevents sound from leaking through walls.

By controlling the sealed space volume and damping characteristics, and maintaining complete control over driver performance, crossover design, and cabinet construction, Masterpiece CI in-wall and in-ceiling speakers deliver an emotionally immersive experience comparable to the performance of the world's most exceptional floorstanding speakers. Die-cast Aluminum Mounting and Locking System

A simple yet robust die-cast aluminum mounting locking system maximizes strength while allowing for quick, hassle-free installation. Pocket screw holes help keep your drill in place, making installation a breeze. When not in use, the mounting blocks are secured inside a self-contained housing. When moved into position, they firmly attach the frame to the ceiling or wall, adding rigidity to the surfaces. If ever removed, the blocks retract and snap back into their housings. Each speaker includes a full-size installation template with quick-reference instructions and die-cut guides to mark the cutout hole.

Spring-Type Binding Posts

Featuring easy pre-installation access, our spring-type binding posts feature a large access hole for 4.5mm wire and connect via banana plug, pin, or bare 10AWG wire.

Vojtko crossovers are named after MartinLogan's chief audio engineer, Joe Vojtko.

His unique approach to crossover design is as crucial to MartinLogan's Truth in Sound as are our innovative electrostatic and Folded Motion thin-film driver technologies. A Vojtko crossover is more than just a set of design requirements; is a philosophy.

Vojtko crossovers are hand-built with the highest-quality components and avoid overly complex topologies. This crossover has a simple goal: breathtaking realism.

Hand-Selected Components

In designing each crossover topology, we consider the drivers themselves. Carefully selected drivers, designed for specific performance characteristics, are held within their optimal frequency range by the custom Vojtko crossover.

Each crossover is hand-crafted using exceptional polypropylene and polyester capacitors, custom-wound, oversized steel-laminated low-DCR inductors, and double-thickness PCBs. This precisely tuned network preserves even the most microscopic sonic nuances while handling the full dynamics of any source. It's a recipe for incredibly low distortion and seamless driver integration.

The most critical aspect of a Vojtko crossover design is the final voicing, always conducted in a real-world environment. This unique, pragmatic approach ensures that even the most stunning MartinLogan speakers, like the massive Statement 40XW, deliver the Truth of Sound to any room, including yours.

On In-Wall Frames (Sold Separately)

The appeal of in-wall speakers is well known, but sometimes they are not a practical option. Whether room construction prevents it or you are simply looking to create a more customized look, these in-wall frames transform Masterpiece CI in-wall speakers into incredible in-wall speakers! At just 4.5" deep, these in-wall frames make the Icon, Tribute or Monument in-wall speakers the perfect solution for a relatively low profile in-wall speaker. Their integrated, sealed enclosures ensure consistent sound no matter which mounting method you choose. The in-wall frames ship in a paintable white finish, ready to be customized, creating a blank canvas that can add a pop of color or simply disappear. The possibilities are endless!
