At Pro-Ject we aim to revive a classic analogue concept from the eighties, and combine it with our advanced contemporary technologies. After eighteen years of producing turntables for analogue lovers on a budget, we are delighted to announce our first deck that doesn't subscribe to budget restrictions.

Already, the critically acclaimed 6perspeX demonstrated the fantastic result of using magnets to isolate the subchassis. Consequently, for the Xtension this technology has been reworked to use new magnetic feet, which almost completely decouple the main plinth. With these two magnets positioned in the feet, the turntable is virtually floating. Combine this with the heavy 30kg total mass of the turntable, and the listener benefits from minimal base resonance. This is a unique combination of ‘mass loaded’ and ‘floating turntable’ design principles. In keeping with these principles, the platter is made of metal due to its high mass. The old standard of pure metal has been abandoned due to its highly resonant tendencies. Instead, we found a perfect alloy which we damped on the inside with Sorbothane®. Taking this base, we glued recycled vinyl records on top (which act as the perfect mat) and baked this ‘sandwich’ before balancing it with precision. The end product then benefits from a heavy and wonderfully resonance-free platter. Another consideration was the amount of energy the tonearm would have to absorb from the movement of the tonearm and cartridge. These energies need to be controlled, as do those of the motor and bearing (they need to be kept away from the tonearm to avoid interference). Consequently, the tonearm on the Xtension 12 Evolution also benefits from ‘high mass’ technologies and is isolated from the main circuit board by a sheet of Sorbothane®. It is important to note, however, that this board is still capable of incorporating the adoption of different tonearms. As we initially stated with this turntable, in keeping with its ‘classic’ ethos, the Xtension comes with a beautiful dust cover with adjustable hinges.

The Xtension 12 Evolution is supplied as standard with the Premium 5-pin Tonearm Cable > RCA Cable. For optimum connection to the Phono Box RS or RS2, the Symmetrical Premium 5-pin Tonearm Cable > XLR is available separately. Phono Box RS and RS2 offer balanced phono inputs, which ensure superior results when playing high-end vinyl with a balanced signal source.
