The PH Septima is considered one of Poul Henningsen's finest pendants. When it was first presented as a prototype at the Danish Museum of Decorative Art (now Designmuseum Danmark) in 1928, it was highly praised by the public. Based on the PH's three-shade system, the glass crown has four additional shades sandwiched between the three main shades, all seven of which are made from delicate yet durable Italian borosilicate glass. The clear glass shades are treated to appear as alternating fields of transparent and frosted glass, and are positioned so that the frosted fields cover the transparent ones underneath, allowing the shades to diffuse the light more diffusely while maintaining a glare-free, downward spread of light. A round glass cup is also positioned at the top to prevent dust from falling into the lamp. In 1931, a PH Septima 4 was launched based on the shade dimensions of the PH 4/4, while the PH Septima 5 is based on the shade dimensions of the PH 5/5. During the development of the PH Septima, Henningsen also created a metal version that never went into production. His drawings did, however, form the basis for the development of the PH Artichoke, designed some thirty years later for the Langelinie Pavilion in Copenhagen. Unfortunately, the much-loved PH Septima, like many other lamps, went out of production in the 1940s due to a shortage of raw materials. In 2020, Louis Poulsen reintroduces the sophisticated seven-shade glass crown inspired by the PH Septima 5 with optimised suspension and glass for improved strength and stability.

Lighting system

The seven-shade glass crown emits glare-free light directed downwards and diffuses a pleasant, soft glow. From shade to shade, the frosted glass fields alternately cover the transparent ones, creating an even more delicate diffusion of light.
