The AJ Oxford table lamp has an elegant graphic expression that reflects the architecture of St Catherine's College, Oxford, for which it was originally designed. St Catherine's College, opened in 1963, was designed by Arne Jacobsen in a modernist style, which contrasts with the surrounding classical architecture of Oxford University. The AJ Oxford table lamp was initially designed as a pivot table lamp for the college's impressive dining hall which housed long rows of oak tables, seating 350 people. The table lamps act as centrepieces on the tables, while natural light comes from the skylights and the wall-mounted AJ Eklipta provides diffused general lighting. The lamp is located in St Catherine's College which is still open today for teaching and as a student residence. The AJ Oxford lamp has a slim stem, similar to those of the AJ lamp collection, which blends seamlessly into the circular base. With its graphic style and monochrome colour palette, the AJ Oxford table lamp is a timeless addition to any home. The table lamp is available in a few variations, with or without a metal top shade and in two different heights, the smaller one is ideal for smaller spaces and fits perfectly on a shelf or windowsill. In addition, the taller version is also available as a pivot table lamp, a testament to Arne Jacobsen's original design.
DESIGNED FOR THE TIMES
Originally designed in 1962 for St Catherine's College, the AJ Oxford lamp was created by Arne Jacobsen as part of his modernist Gesamtkunstwerk, which contrasts with the surrounding classical buildings of Oxford University. With its graphic lines and monochrome colour palette, the AJ Oxford lamp is perfect for the modern home.
IN CONTRAST WITH THE CLASSIC
Specially designed by Arne Jacobsen for St Catherine's College, Oxford, the AJ Oxford Table Lamp reflects the modernist style of the building, which contrasts with the classical architecture of the University of Oxford.
DESIGN DETAILS
When you look at the AJ Oxford up close, you notice even the smallest details. For example, the brass screw that holds the shade in place and the elegant way in which the cable is channeled into the stem of the lamp.
Lighting system
This table lamp provides a pleasant downward light that harmoniously illuminates the surface below through the soft transparency of the mouth-blown, three-layer opal glass. In the variant without the upper metal screen, the milky opal glass screen provides additional brightness and forms an attractive halo around the luminaire.
