Poul Henningsen created the three-shade system in 1925-26. The first lights to use this system were designed by PH in collaboration with Louis Poulsen for an exhibition in Paris. This collaboration continued until his death in 1967. Throughout his life, PH sought to achieve glare-free and direct lighting where it was most needed, creating soft shadows with incandescent bulbs as the source. The PH 80 is part of the PH three-shade family. PH therefore did not just design a lamp, but an entire system: over the years around a thousand different models were produced. PH was the first to pursue a scientific approach to lighting and to use the logarithmic spiral as its basis. Using the logarithmic spiral design, he achieved an even distribution of light over the entire curvature of the shade. This even distribution of light, together with the diffuse reflection through the glass, allowed glare and shadow to be controlled. Given their distance from the light source, each shade reduces the amount of light equally. The PH 80 is based on the same three-shade design centered on the logarithmic spiral. PH80, the lamp's model number, does not refer to the diameter of the top shade, as is usual in the system that applies three-shade designs. The lamp was created in 1974 after PH's death to celebrate 80 years since his birth - hence the name PH 80. The original PH 80, designed in 1974, features a distinctive red top reflector that spreads a warm, atmospheric light. The opal acrylic shades give a light appearance and emit a diffused, attractive light into the room. The PH 80 was later introduced in a black and white finish with a smoother surface on the base compared to the slightly rougher surface of the classic PH 80 version. The black PH 80 has a black top plate and a white top reflector for a sleek, crisp look and pleasant light distribution. The stand and lamp holder are matt black, adding a stylish contrast to the opal acrylic shades and a more graphic look. The white version adds a minimalist all-white design to the PH 80 range with a white top reflector, top plate and stand. The monochrome palette completes the PH 80 series with modern and elegant alternatives to the classic PH 80.
Lighting system
The luminaire provides a soft, reflected and symmetrical light. Most of the light is directed downwards and the opal acrylic shades provide comfortable lighting. The red shade of the top reflector on the original fixture adds a warm, rich glow to the light. The black and white fixtures have a white top reflector that reflects the light and gives a sleek, crisp look. Your choice of light source will determine the color of the lighting.
