JBL Synthesis Conceal C86 Dual-Panel In-Ceiling Loudspeaker

The flagship of the series, the JBL Conceal C86 fully concealed in-ceiling loudspeaker is a 3-way, dual-panel design, with a separate LF panel and a 2-way 5-driver MF/HF panel. Built around a patented compression-molded baffle and paintable Fidelity Glass™ exterior skin, the finished speaker panels install easily and completely disappear into the surrounding walls, allowing for optimal placement virtually anywhere in a room. The JBL C86 is the ultimate solution for high-performance architectural audio.

The C86 is the flagship of the JBL Conceal Series. This invisible architectural loudspeaker features a dual-panel design for optimal acoustic performance. Each panel includes a rigid frame that houses the drivers and acoustic components that would be found in a conventional visible-in-wall or in-ceiling architectural loudspeaker. The frame attaches directly to the structural framing of the wall, while the face of the speaker - the FidelityGlass™ panel - features a smooth, durable surface that is designed to be finished similarly to the surrounding drywall. With the edges of the speaker flush with the drywall, the seams are taped and filled using common methods and techniques. Once sanded and properly prepared, the speaker surface simply needs to be painted or wallpapered to match the desired finish.

The smaller C86 panel contains five drive elements that work in tandem with the FidelityGlass™ acoustic panel to deliver the high- and mid-frequency component of the C86's sound. The larger panel uses an 8-inch low-frequency driver that works in tandem with its own FidelityGlass panel to deliver impressive bass performance. The separate panels serve to eliminate interference between high and low frequencies - an artifact known as intermodulation distortion. The two panels can be installed up to three feet (one meter) apart and still deliver high-quality sound.

The base of each of the C86's two component panels is a compression-molded baffle that provides a rigid frame for the entire assembly. The FidelityGlass acoustic panel is attached to the frame and serves as a diaphragm for the transducers. Inside the small high- and mid-frequency panel, four neodymium mid-frequency drivers and one neodymium high-frequency driver work in harmony with the custom materials and tuning of the FidelityGlass panel to deliver pristine detail and accurate sound. To balance the C86 system, the low-frequency panel uses an 8-inch (200 mm) high-power woofer that works in conjunction with a FidelityGlass panel and a tuned enclosure that together delivers solid bass performance that rivals traditional visible solutions. The advanced crossover network located on the high- and mid-frequency panel is based on JBL's industry-leading acoustic expertise and includes self-restoring protection circuitry for the C86 system for maximum long-term reliability. The integrated wood back box enclosure helps focus sound in the room and minimize acoustic intrusion into adjacent spaces.

Installing the Conceal Invisible speaker is accomplished just as you would install a standard drywall patch. For new construction, a wooden dowel is available to mark the location as the drywall is being installed. Detailed instructions are available to ensure proper installation. After installing and double-checking the panel's drywall fit, it is critical to test the speakers for proper operation with an amplified sound source prior to moving on to the drywall taping and finishing stages.

The complete invisibility of the Conceal Series products, combined with their wide hemispherical acoustic coverage pattern, allows for optimal placement virtually anywhere in a room, whether on a wall or in a ceiling. The finished aesthetic benefits far exceed those of a traditional in-wall or in-ceiling speaker resulting in a new level of performance. The JBL Conceal Series is the ultimate solution for high-performance architectural audio.
