The glass version of PH Artichoke dates back to 1927-31, when Poul Henningsen designed a pendant lamp in this material called PH Septima with seven types of lampshade, produced by Louis Poulsen until 1940, when it went out of production due of the lack of material during the war. In 1958 Poul Henningsen was asked to design a lamp for the Langelinie Pavillonen restaurant, a task which was completed in three months, as PH Artichoke is based on the ideas behind PH Septima. PH Septima consisted of seven sandblasted clear glass lampshades in six backgrounds. PH Artichoke had “sawtooth” split lampshades, as Poul Henningsen called them, and was made of copper. PH Artichoke Glass, handmade and sandblasted glass, has a similar expression to that of PH Septima. The soft light diffuses through the leaves, to produce soft and comfortable lighting. Whether on or off, the lamp has an "ice look" that gives a touch of elegance and brightness to any room.
Lighting system
The luminaire emits 100% glare-free light. The 72 precisely positioned blades form 12 unique rows of six blades each and illuminate the fixture, as well as emitting a diffused light with a unique pattern. The reflection from the source is diffused into the lower sandblasted surfaces and this light is decoratively reflected onto the upper surfaces, giving the luminaire a unique brightness. The surface treatment on the glass sheets eliminates direct glare. For the energy-saving LED variant the quality of light and the atmosphere around the product are kept at a maximum level.
