The Arcam PA720 high performance multi-channel power amplifier features seven channels of efficient Class G amplification, delivering an impressive 140W per channel, ensuring maximum flexibility and power without compromising control.
The Arcam PA720 also features the finest components including a toroidal power supply, acoustically damped chassis, parallel transistor output stages and exceptionally low distortion levels (0.002% 1kHz/8ohms).
Offering 140W per channel into seven driven into a 4ohm load (100W into 8ohm), the PA720 is capable of delivering up to 175W per channel with five channels driven and up to 225W with two channels driven.
Class G amplification, which is found in a number of Arcam products, is a derivative of Class AB, however, a trick is used in the power supply stage to increase efficiency. In practice, the power supply can provide two different supply voltages (a lower one and a higher one) and there is a part of the circuit (lift) that takes care of switching appropriately between the two.
In the absence of a signal or with a small signal, which requires “little” output power, which can be obtained without problems with the lower power supply, the electronics (especially the final stage) is powered with the low voltage and therefore less bias current flows and the dissipation is lower. When instead there are peaks that require greater power, the power supply is switched and the higher one is used, so as to be able to supply the required power only for the necessary time. Efficiency can thus exceed 80% (85.9% theoretical maximum).
