Musical Fidelity: New BPC Series Power Conditioners
Musical Fidelity debuts with its first power filters, called BPC, or Balanced Power Conditioner, tackling the problem in a very original way. The operation is in fact based on a toroidal transformer, which acts as a 1:1 filter. The secret, however, is in how it is wound, a single primary connected to the mains voltage, and a corresponding number of secondaries with the outputs, thus creating not only galvanic separation between the mains and users, but also between the users themselves, so as not to chain disturbances between one product and another, which instead happens with the cheaper products which, although excellent filters in themselves, then put the output in parallel.
A chaining that in particular must absolutely be avoided in general, especially between electronics with a plug-in switching power supply and those equipped with an external transformer. One filter output can be used for all users with a switching power supply by adopting a power strip, and the other for all those with a linear power supply, it is important not to exceed the maximum absorption under penalty of the intervention of the No-Fuse-Breaker with which the BPCs are equipped, and which avoids overloads.
Therefore more zones capable of supplying a certain output power, obviously dependent on the model: BPC3 with 2X300VA, BPC5 with two more outputs but one of 1000VA and the other of 200VA, then BPC10 with 3 zones, one of 1550VA and the other two of 200VA and finally the top of the range BPC16 with 2 zones of 600VA and one of 2000VA. The sizing has been done wisely so as to power an integrated amplifier in the first models and perhaps a power amplifier in the larger ones and the sources, whether DAC, player, streamer, turntable, with the sole exception of BPC3 dedicated exclusively to low-absorption loads.
All Musical Fidelity BPC conditioners also protect equipment through the innovative suppression of overvoltages in series mode. Most of the competition's mains filters send peaks to ground, with a consequent increase in the ground potential and consequent contamination of the audio and video signals. The BPCs instead absorb overvoltages greater than 2 V compared to the peak value of the line, so that the ground is never involved.
They are also equipped with the "No-Fuse-Breaker", a fuse with button reset; when the device detects an overload it goes into protection mode, and if it is necessary to reset the device, simply press the relevant button on the rear panel.
Finally, all BPCs are equipped with undervoltage (UVP) and overvoltage (OVP) protection, with a LED synoptic panel on the front panel indicating the operating status.
