The high-end preamplifier at an affordable price

Successor to the X-P500, the X-P700 offers technical refinements rarely found in this price range: dual-mono design and the most direct signal processing possible (Direct Path). A further advantage is the possibility of choosing between two output schemes: Class A mode, which uses bipolar transistors in a double cascade circuit, similar to a tube gradient, and Discrete mode, based on a differential JFET and a current mirror in the bipolar transistors, biased in the more traditional Class AB. The design is sober and essential, with a single rotary knob and a button to confirm the choices: access to the inputs, volume control, bass/treble tone, balance and intensity. The remote control allows you to activate these functions from a distance.

The X-P700 is truly complete: nine analog inputs, one of which is balanced, and an MM/MC phono input. On the digital side: two optical inputs, one coaxial input, a USB-B (Xmos) port and a USB-A port. The DAC is the powerful Burr Brown PCM 1796 24-bit/192 kHz converter. On the output side, the X-P700 offers a double RCA output with a balanced XLR output, as well as a high-pass and two subwoofer outputs. Headphone enthusiasts will also be satisfied: two front inputs (6.35 and 3.5 mm jack), plus a dual independent input on the bottom, with gain settings of +6, 0 or -4 dB and output impedance of 0 or 100 ohms.

The X-P700 is a high-quality player, starting with the understated 10 mm black methacrylate front panel, typical of the Classic line. But the inside is even more revealing: two high-capacity toroidal transformers power the filtered and regulated bi-mono power supply on the motherboard, which also houses the preamp stages. The quality of the MC phono stage with adjustable high and low levels, as well as the capability of the MM preamp, is remarkable for this price range: it's hard to imagine anything better.

In short, at the price at which the new X-P700 is offered, it's hard to find better. This is what we wanted from the very beginning of the development of this new preamplifier. We spared no expense on the quality of the components, decoding, or power supply: the kind of attention that counts when you listen.
