The Arcam PA240 high performance stereo power amplifier features two channels of efficient Class G amplification, offering an impressive 380W per channel into 4 ohms (225W into 8 ohms and a massive 790W per channel in bridged mode), ensuring maximum flexibility and power without compromising control.

The Arcam PA240 also features a toroidal based power supply, acoustically damped chassis, parallel transistor output stages and offers exceptionally low levels of distortion.

Class G amplification, which is found in a number of Arcam products, is a derivative of Class AB but uses a design feature in the power supply to increase efficiency. In practice, the power supply can provide two different supply voltages (a lower one and a higher one) and there is a part of the circuit (lift) that takes care of switching appropriately between the two.

In the absence of a signal or with a small signal, which requires “little” output power, which can be obtained without problems with the lower power supply, the electronics (especially the final stage) is powered with the low voltage and therefore less bias current flows and the dissipation is lower. When instead there are peaks that require greater power, the power supply is switched and the higher one is used, so as to be able to supply the required power only for the necessary time. Efficiency can thus exceed 80% (85.9% theoretical maximum).
